About Me

Peter de Boer – Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor

Thank you for visiting my site. I am a qualified professional counsellor, psychotherapist and clinical supervisor and a member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society. I completed my post-grad professional qualification in counselling and psychotherapy at the University of South Wales. Alongside this, I am also a Senior Practitioner in Children and Family Services for Bristol City Council. I have worked at Bristol City Council at a senior level for over 30 years and hold professional qualifications in my workplace to a Masters level.

I have adult children and I enjoy the outdoors where I am also a qualified mountain leader. I have always been interested in counselling and psychotherapy. I completed my first qualification in this field in 1990 and have used counselling myself many times, especially during difficult or challenging periods in my life. I find it really helps.

I am trained as an integrative psychotherapist; this means that I use different theories and approaches depending on the client’s needs. These include humanistic, relational psychodynamic, cognitive behaviour therapy or transactional analysis. I wouldn’t expect you to know these terms, but you’re welcome to research them to understand more.

I encourage all my clients to keep a journal, log, art book, notes or a diary as clients tend to get the best from the therapy when they’re also engaged in it outside of our sessions.

Sometimes we need to look to our past to move forwards and to understand our patterns of behaviour. Although we may need to look at these patterns, I also encourage a forward looking solution focused approach. I will therefore ask you what you’re hoping to seek from counselling.
